Iconoclasts Sonya Lifschitz (piano) and Christine Johnston (vocals, musical saw, OHP) bring George Crumb’s modern masterpiece to life as part of the 2026 Monash University Performing Arts Centres’ Sound Gallery Series and their Monash University Artists-in-Residence.

2026 BUNDANON ARTIST RESIDENCY

Project: Palzang’s Piano.

Pianist Sonya Lifschitz, sound-artist Diana Chester, and composer Damien Ricketson are developing a new installation and performance work on the aesthetics of listening to our environment. The project emerges from a Collaborative Fellowship held by Diana Chester and Damien Ricketson with the Sydney Environment Institute that resulted in a sensory sound installation - Listening to Earth (Feb 2024) which invited audiences to listen and connect to their environment through sound and vibration in a fixed installation environment:

WINNER - Australian Women in Music Awards (AWMA) 2024 QPAC Excellence in Classical Music Award.

Sonya Lifschitz wins the 2024 QPAC Excellence in Classical Music Award alongside finalists Miriam Gordon-Stewart, Karin Schaupp.

 

The award recognises a mid-to-late career female, non-binary or gender diverse classical music artist who has demonstrated musical excellence throughout their career.

at the 2025 Canberra International Music Festival.

"Ukrainian-born, Australian-based virtuoso pianist Sonya Lifschitz performs in “duet” with herself in this groundbreaking collaboration with composer Damian Barbeler and media artist Tim Gruchy. Through innovative technology, watch Sonya perform alongside recordings of herself playing in Australia’s wild places, including the breathtaking salt Lake Gairdner. Known for her fiercely imaginative, daring collaborations across film, animation, spoken word, visual and performance art, Sonya’s Duet for One is a feast for both eyes and ears!"

Sonya Lifschitz is an award-winning Ukrainian-Australian pianist, performance-maker, pedagogue, artistic researcher, and cultural leader at the forefront of classical and contemporary art music. Recognised with the 2024 Australian Women in Music Excellence in Classical Music Award and praised internationally by The New York Times and The Age for her “dynamic” and “powerful” performances, she has appeared at major festivals and venues worldwide including the Barbican Centre (London), Venice Biennale, De Doelen (Rotterdam), Bargemusic (New York), and all of Australia’s major festivals. With repertoire spanning from 15th-century Faenza Codex to works written for her today, Sonya is known for her fiercely imaginative, daring collaborations across theatre, dance, film, visual art, and spoken word to create work that positions art music at the nexus of interdisciplinary performance practices.
